Bayern defeat Dortmund to win German Supercup

Bayern Munich opened the 2026/27 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in Saturday’s German Supercup at Signal Iduna Park. Nathaniel Brown scored on his competitive debut after 28 minutes, finishing a move created by Michael Olise, before Olise doubled the visitors’ lead in first-half stoppage time. Dortmund improved after the interval and pulled one back through Fábio Silva in the 75th minute, but Bayern held on. Ramy Bensebaini was sent off in the 90th minute for a foul on substitute Ismael Saibari, leaving Dortmund unable to complete its recovery.

The result gave Bayern their 12th German Supercup and an early trophy after last season’s domestic double. Vincent Kompany’s team will now begin the defence of its Bundesliga title at home to VfB Stuttgart on Friday, while Dortmund host Hamburg the following day. Olise’s goal and assist made him the decisive attacking figure, while Brown’s immediate contribution offered a notable start following his move from Eintracht Frankfurt. Bayern were without Jamal Musiala, who Reuters said had experienced collapses in two previous friendlies and had disclosed a neurological dysfunction earlier in the week, adding a significant fitness issue to the champions’ preparations.

Leipzig and Leverkusen advance in German Cup

RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen progressed to the second round of the DFB-Pokal with convincing victories on Saturday. Leipzig began Martín Demichelis’s competitive tenure with a 6-0 away win over fourth-tier Eintracht Trier, scoring three times before half-time and adding three more after the break. Brajan Gruda, Willi Orbán, Ridle Baku, Conrad Harder, Antonio Nusa and Ezechiel Banzuzi were credited with the goals, although the third was described as possibly an own goal. Leverkusen, under new head coach Carles Martínez, won 4-0 at third-tier Wehen Wiesbaden, with Patrik Schick, Lucas Vázquez, Nathan Tella and Christian Kofane on target.

The results offered both clubs a straightforward start to new managerial eras, although the opposition came from lower divisions. Demichelis said Leipzig maintained a professional approach after going 3-0 ahead and called the performance “very dominant”, while also identifying the final third as an area for improvement. Martínez described his first match as special and acknowledged that Leverkusen still had work to do despite the margin of victory. Augsburg, Hoffenheim, Elversberg and Werder Bremen also joined them in the next round, with Werder’s returning loan signing Niclas Füllkrug scoring a penalty on his comeback.

Neuer suggests 2026/27 could be his final season

Manuel Neuer has suggested that the 2026/27 season could be his last in professional football and his final campaign with Bayern Munich. According to World Today Journal, the 40-year-old goalkeeper made the comments after Bayern’s 2-1 Supercup victory over Borussia Dortmund, when asked by SAT.1 whether it might be his last Supercup interview. Neuer reportedly replied: “Now is the time to enjoy everything once again. Then I'll see how the season goes. But basically, I do believe that this can be the last one.” His contract runs until 2027, and the report said he had indicated it would not be extended.

The potential departure of Bayern’s captain would mark the end of a defining era for the club, though Neuer’s wording left the decision dependent on how the season develops. The report also said Bayern were positioning Jonas Urbig as his successor, giving the club a succession plan while retaining an experienced goalkeeper for the campaign ahead. Neuer is preparing for his 21st Bundesliga season, and his future will remain a major storyline as Bayern begin their title defence. His immediate focus, however, was on starting the season after lifting another trophy in Dortmund.

Leipzig loan Elmas to Atalanta with purchase option

RB Leipzig midfielder Eljif Elmas joined Atalanta on loan with a purchase option, according to an announcement reported by Haberler.com on Saturday. The 26-year-old North Macedonia international will spend the season with the Serie A club after previously playing for Fenerbahçe and Napoli. Haberler said Atalanta confirmed the loan deal through the end of the season and included an option to buy. Elmas was reported to have made 44 appearances for Napoli last season and scored once. The move gives Leipzig a route to a permanent transfer while allowing Atalanta to assess the midfielder in Italy.

Elmas’s departure changes Leipzig’s midfield options as Demichelis begins his first competitive season in charge. The German club started that campaign with a 6-0 German Cup win at Eintracht Trier, but the loan arrangement indicates that Elmas is not central to the immediate plans described in the report. For Atalanta, the agreement adds a player with Bundesliga and Serie A experience without an immediate permanent commitment. Elmas said he was happy to return to Italy and would do everything he could for Atalanta, setting out his intention to make the temporary move count.

Dortmund keep India tour possibility under review

Borussia Dortmund are interested in taking their first-team squad to India for a future tour, according to comments from chief executive Carsten Cramer reported by NDTV Sports on Saturday. Cramer said the club would seriously consider visiting if it received an invitation, while explaining that the Indian market was discussed internally “season by season”. Dortmund have regularly travelled to Asian markets including Japan for pre-season and commercial activity, but India has not yet formed part of that programme. Cramer’s remarks came during a visit to Germany ahead of the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.

The club’s interest reflects India’s growing football audience and the wider commercial opportunity for Bundesliga sides, although any tour would depend on timing and an appropriate strategy. Dortmund’s established Asian presence gives the proposal a clear precedent, but Cramer presented the idea as a possibility rather than a confirmed fixture. A first-team visit would offer the club a chance to deepen its international profile beyond existing destinations while bringing Bundesliga players directly to a market the league has yet to fully develop. For now, the next step is an invitation and further internal planning.
