Augsburg came from behind to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 on Sunday and move top of the Bundesliga for the first time in club history. Elversberg won their first two Bundesliga matches after completing a remarkable rise from regional football in 2022. The newcomers opened the season by racing into a 3-0 lead against Bayer Leverkusen, the 2024 champions, before holding on for a 3-2 victory. Elversberg’s results have reinforced the value of the playing identity that carried them through the German pyramid. Technical director Josef Welzmuller said the club had chosen to retain its possession-and-pressing principles rather than adopt a more cautious approach designed simply to survive. That decision has delivered two wins from two, although the early table offers no guarantee of a lasting challenge. Lee’s contribution gave him his first Bundesliga assist of the campaign and his second assist in all competitions after setting up a goal against fifth-tier VfB Krieschow in the opening round of the DFB-Pokal on 24 August. Mainz’s five-goal display also stood out in a matchday that produced several striking results, including Elversberg’s perfect start and Augsburg’s rise to the summit. For Hamburg, the scale of the defeat made it a difficult response to their return to the top flight. Mainz’s result instead suggested a side quickly recovering momentum after being held in the opening round.

Harry Kane said he was “extremely proud” to be in contention for the Ballon d’Or after scoring 73 goals for club and country last season. The forward acknowledged that the decision was now with the voters, while stressing that his attention had already turned towards improving in the new season. His early Bundesliga return has been quieter: Kane had yet to score in Bayern’s opening two league games, a 5-1 win against Stuttgart and the goalless draw at Schalke. His previous campaign nevertheless keeps him at the centre of the award discussion.
