Karetsas hospitalised after collapsing during Dortmund debut

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas was taken to hospital after collapsing during his Champions League debut against Villarreal on Tuesday. The 18-year-old Greek international went down around the 25-minute mark, shortly after passing the ball to a team-mate, and was carried off in the 27th minute while the score remained 0-0. Medical staff treated Karetsas on the pitch before he was removed to applause from players and supporters. Borussia Dortmund said he had suffered circulatory problems and was in a stable condition. Karetsas joined Dortmund from Genk on 3 August and had only recently begun his career with the club.

The incident overshadowed what became a 3-2 Dortmund victory, but the immediate priority was Karetsas’s health rather than the result. His appearance had represented an important early step for a teenage midfielder recruited during the summer, making the sudden stoppage particularly concerning for the club and supporters. Dortmund’s statement provided reassurance that he was stable after the hospitalisation, while the circumstances will inevitably prompt further medical assessment before any return to training or competition. The episode also underlined the demands placed on a young player making his first appearance at European level, even as his new team secured a valuable win.

Veerman helps Dortmund overcome Villarreal in Champions League

Borussia Dortmund defeated Villarreal 3-2 in the Champions League, with Joey Veerman producing what Goal described as his first masterstroke for the club. The Dutch midfielder’s display was presented as evidence that Dortmund may have found the central creative presence they have lacked. The club have had several capable midfielders, including Marcel Sabitzer, Felix Nmecha, Jobe Bellingham and Julian Brandt, but the analysis suggested that coach Niko Kovac had not previously trusted any of them to build play consistently through the middle. Veerman’s performance therefore stood out in a match Dortmund won by a single goal after an open contest.

Veerman’s influence could alter the way Dortmund construct attacks under Kovac. The coach has generally preferred quick distribution towards the wings, particularly when opponents press, but the Villarreal performance suggested the new signing can give the side another route through the centre. That matters because wide players can become easier to contain when opponents block the flanks, limiting Dortmund’s creativity. Veerman’s ability to take responsibility in midfield may also improve the players around him, although one Champions League performance cannot settle the question of whether the system has fundamentally changed. The victory nevertheless gave Dortmund an encouraging European result and offered an early indication of Veerman’s potential importance.

Bayern prepare for Bodø/Glimt after Schalke stalemate

Bayern Munich prepared to face Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League on Thursday after being held to a 0-0 draw by Schalke 04 at the weekend. Manuel Neuer warned that the Norwegian side would be difficult to dismiss, describing them as a team capable of fighting and playing good football with Champions League experience. The Bayern captain was set to make his 162nd appearance in the competition, moving closer to Iker Casillas’s goalkeeper record of 177. Bayern were eliminated by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s semi-finals, losing 6-5 on aggregate, and were seeking a stronger European campaign.

Vincent Kompany said Bayern would not underestimate Bodø/Glimt, praising their running, pressing and commitment to a clear tactical idea. He also emphasised the importance of keeping his squad fresh and healthy, an issue that gives added weight to his belief in competition for places. The Schalke draw increased the need for a sharper performance, particularly with Bayern expected to carry domestic pressure into Europe despite their strong recent Bundesliga record. Neuer’s experience remains central to the campaign, while Kompany’s challenge is to balance his strongest team with the freshness needed across a demanding schedule.

Seol Young-woo targets regular football after Augsburg move

Augsburg’s new South Korean defender Seol Young-woo said he wanted to establish himself in the Bundesliga after joining from Crvena Zvezda. The transfer was completed on 27 August, with local reports putting the fee at up to €5.5 million including options. Augsburg announced a contract running until 30 June 2030 and gave Seol the number seven shirt. He made his debut as a stoppage-time substitute in the 3-0 home victory over Schalke on 31 August, registering an assist with his first pass. The 28-year-old had previously played in Serbia after beginning his professional career with Ulsan HD.

Seol’s move represents a significant step from the Serbian league to one of Europe’s major domestic competitions, but regular selection will not be automatic. He acknowledged the competition for places while speaking to South Korean media on Wednesday and also discussed adapting to life in Germany and his international ambitions. Augsburg have invested in a player whose performances for Crvena Zvezda earned strong recognition, including two consecutive selections in the Serbian Superliga Team of the Year. His brief debut cameo offered an immediate contribution, but the longer-term test will be turning that promising start into a consistent Bundesliga role.

Leipzig sell Suleman Sani to Al-Qadsiah

RB Leipzig forward Suleman Sani completed a permanent move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah after less than eight months in Germany. The 20-year-old Nigerian joined Leipzig from Slovakian club AS Trenčín in January for a reported fee of about €5 million, but left without making a competitive first-team appearance. Reports cited by PUNCH said the Al-Qadsiah transfer could be worth up to €8 million, with Sani expected to sign a three-year contract containing an option for another season. The deal was completed on the final day of Saudi Arabia’s transfer window, ending an unexpectedly brief Bundesliga spell.

Sani’s departure gives Leipzig the prospect of a financial return despite the winger never appearing for the senior side. According to the reports, injuries and strong competition for attacking positions had prevented him from breaking into the first team. The move instead offers the Nigeria youth international a route towards a more prominent role in Saudi Arabia, where Al-Qadsiah are building their squad. Leipzig’s decision also reflects the difficult pathway facing young attackers at a club with substantial competition for places: recruitment can be swift, but first-team opportunities are not guaranteed, even after a sizeable investment.

Leverkusen’s Ibrahim Maza nominated for Kopa Trophy

Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Ibrahim Maza was nominated for the 2026 Ballon d’Or Young Talent of the Year award, commonly known as the Kopa Trophy. The 20-year-old was included in a 10-player shortlist alongside Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí, Lennart Karl, Yan Diomande, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Warren Zaïre-Emery. The winner will be announced at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on 26 October. Maza joined Leverkusen from Hertha BSC in 2025 for a reported €12 million and quickly established himself in the first-team setup after arriving with expectations to help replace Florian Wirtz.

The nomination recognised a rapid rise that has continued into the new season. Maza’s breakthrough campaign has made him one of Leverkusen’s most prominent young players and placed him in a field led by Yamal, the two-time holder and current champion. For Leverkusen, the recognition also reinforces the club’s ability to develop or accelerate emerging talent after a major departure. Maza now faces competition from players already operating on the European stage, but his inclusion means his progress is being judged alongside the leading under-21 performers in world football rather than solely within the Bundesliga.
