Ferran Torres rescues PSG after Rennes expose champions’ slow start

Paris Saint-Germain began their Ligue 1 title defence with a 2-2 draw at Rennes on Sunday, recovering from a two-goal half-time deficit. Sebastian Szymanski put Rennes ahead in the ninth minute, while Estéban Lepaul doubled the advantage in the 38th. PSG responded after the interval when Luis Enrique replaced Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia with Ferran Torres and Mika Godts. Torres reduced the arrears in the 71st minute before heading an equaliser eight minutes from time, securing a point for the reigning champions.

Torres became only the third player in PSG history to score twice on his debut, following Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2012 and Patrick Mboma in 1994. His intervention also spared PSG a damaging opening defeat, although the result meant they started a Ligue 1 campaign without a win for the first time since Enrique’s first match in charge. Rennes’ pressing and high defensive block disrupted PSG’s build-up before the break, offering an early indication that the club can challenge the established order. Enrique’s half-time decision showed his willingness to make major changes when the champions fall below the required level.

Strasbourg’s poor start raises questions after Marseille defeat

RC Strasbourg Alsace opened the Ligue 1 season with a heavy defeat at Olympique de Marseille on Friday, conceding four unanswered goals. The result extended a difficult pre-season for Hugo Oliveira’s side, who had lost six and drawn one of their seven summer matches while allowing 21 goals. Oliveira had arrived from Famalicão to replace Gary O’Neil, who was bound for Ipswich Town, and had urged his players to trust the process during the build-up to the campaign. Marseille’s emphatic victory instead left Strasbourg facing immediate pressure to find defensive stability.

The performance prompted serious questions about whether Strasbourg’s new tactical ideas have taken root. The side was described as disjointed at the Vélodrome, with Oliveira’s principles yet to produce a convincing display or result. A single opening defeat does not define a season, but the scale of the scoreline and the run of pre-season results make the early fixtures particularly important. Strasbourg must improve quickly if the coaching change is to be viewed as a genuine rebuild rather than another unsettled phase for a club beginning the campaign without a clear sense of direction.

Terem Moffi leaves Nice for permanent Hamburg transfer

Terem Moffi completed a permanent move from OGC Nice to Bundesliga club Hamburg on Monday, ending his time with the Ligue 1 side. The 27-year-old Nigeria international became Hamburg’s seventh signing of the summer and was handed the number nine shirt. He arrived with a record of 88 goals and 13 assists in 228 competitive appearances across six countries. The transfer gives Hamburg an experienced centre-forward as the club continues preparations for its return to the Bundesliga, while Nice lose a senior attacking option to the German market.

Hamburg sporting director Claus Costa said Moffi was difficult to contain because of his physicality, determination and style of play. Moffi also praised the coach’s persuasive approach, the club’s direction and its support among the fans. His departure represents another significant change in Nice’s forward line, while Hamburg will expect his previous scoring record to translate into immediate Bundesliga production. The move also underlines the continued movement of established Ligue 1 players to other major European leagues during the closing stages of the transfer window.

Rennes forward Breel Embolo joins Atlanta United for reported $18m

Breel Embolo left Rennes for Atlanta United in a reported $18 million transfer, signing a four-year contract with the MLS club on Sunday. The Switzerland international scored 10 goals and supplied three assists during his only season with Rennes in 2025-26, having previously played for Ligue 1 rivals Monaco. Embolo was presented to Atlanta supporters before the club’s 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City. The 29-year-old brought a career record of 100 goals in 380 matches, with earlier spells at Basel, Schalke and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Atlanta sporting director Chris Henderson welcomed Embolo’s arrival, which ranks among the biggest transfers in MLS history. For Rennes, the deal removes a proven international attacker shortly after the club secured Europa League football and during a campaign that began with a 2-2 draw against PSG. Embolo’s move leaves Estéban Lepaul as an even more prominent figure in Rennes’ attack, while Atlanta will expect the new Designated Player to add experience and goals as the club pursues a stronger challenge in the United States.

Manchester City and Aston Villa monitor Rennes striker Estéban Lepaul

Manchester City and Aston Villa are monitoring Rennes striker Estéban Lepaul, according to L’Équipe. The 26-year-old was Ligue 1’s leading scorer last season with 21 goals and helped Rennes secure Europa League qualification. He subsequently signed a contract extension running until 2030. Lepaul continued that form in Rennes’ 2-2 draw with PSG on Sunday, scoring the second goal as his side built a two-goal lead before the champions recovered through Ferran Torres.

Lepaul has reportedly been shortlisted by Atlético Madrid, Napoli and Como, with City and Villa now joining the group of interested clubs. Rennes are understood to be adamant that the forward does not intend to submit a transfer request, making any potential approach dependent on the club’s position and the player’s preference. Interest from Premier League sides could increase attention around a striker who has already produced a decisive opening-weekend performance, but the long-term contract gives Rennes a strong position in negotiations.

Wrexham reportedly target Lyon forward Pavel Šulc

Pavel Šulc has reportedly emerged as a leading transfer target for Wrexham, who are considering a move for the Lyon forward. Football Insider and other outlets said the Welsh club were preparing a bid that would surpass their transfer record as they seek to strengthen their attack and push for Premier League football next season. Lyon are reported to value the 25-year-old Czech Republic international at between £30 million and £35 million. Wrexham’s existing record is the £8 million paid for goalkeeper Anthony Patterson earlier this month.

Šulc joined Lyon from Viktoria Plzeň in August 2025 for an initial €7.5 million, with a further €2.5 million potentially due in bonuses, and signed a contract through 2029. Reports indicate that Wrexham had not made an offer matching Lyon’s valuation, so the story remained at the stage of a possible record-breaking bid rather than a completed transfer. Any agreement would represent a major financial commitment for the club and underline its ambition to build a squad capable of competing at the top end of English football.
