Ligue 1 Daily Report - 2026-09-17: PSG ultras challenge travel ban for Marseille clash

Paris Saint-Germain supporters launched legal action on 17 September against a ban preventing them from travelling to Marseille for Sunday’s Ligue 1 meeting. Local authorities imposed the restriction because of the risk of violent clashes between rival supporters before the match at the Vélodrome. Collectif Ultras Paris said it had asked its lawyer to bring an emergency procedure before the Council of State. The group argued that repeated restrictions since 2015 had taken the place of meaningful dialogue, while France’s Interior Ministry cited a long history of hostility between the two fanbases.

The dispute adds a security and supporter-rights controversy to one of French football’s most high-profile fixtures. Authorities regularly prohibit away supporters from attending matches considered high risk, and reports said the legal challenge was unlikely to succeed. The Interior Ministry referred to incidents during the most recent match attended by both sets of supporters in Paris in February 2018, when eight law-enforcement officers were injured. PSG will therefore face Marseille in an atmosphere shaped by a significant absence in the away section and continuing tension over travel restrictions.

Lille were reported to be top of Ligue 1 on 17 September after collecting 10 points from their opening matches under head coach Davide Ancelotti. Jordan News described the former Paris Saint-Germain fitness coach as having made a strong start in his second head-coaching experience, with Lille challenging the established dominance of the French champions. The report said Lille had lost Ayyoub Bouaddi and Fernandez Bardo for reported fees of €95 million and €60m respectively, yet had continued to set the pace domestically.

Ancelotti said that Paris Saint-Germain had been widely expected to win easily, but that the team needed time to start playing as a united group. Lille’s position gives the club early evidence that its squad-building work can produce a competitive side despite major departures. The points total remains an early-season marker rather than a decisive judgement on the title race, but leading the standings places Lille at the centre of the opening weeks and increases scrutiny on whether they can sustain the challenge against PSG.

Monaco were reported on 17 September to be preparing first professional contracts for Safouane Benzahra, Nahek Haddani and Najd Ajroud. Benzahra, an 18-year-old Morocco youth international, had featured for Monaco’s first team in both Europa Conference League qualifiers and had also played a handful of Ligue 1 minutes this season. Haddani, a 17-year-old attacker, was also expected to sign his first professional agreement, while Ajroud was understood to be set for a three-year deal.

The reported moves underline Monaco’s intention to retain promising young players who have progressed through the club’s development system. Benzahra’s early senior involvement gives his contract particular relevance, while Ajroud’s performances for the Under-19s had reportedly attracted the attention of head coach Filipe Luís. The same report said Melvin Gomes was also expected to sign a first professional contract despite strong interest from Chelsea. Together, the deals would secure several emerging players as Monaco continue integrating youth prospects around their Ligue 1 squad.

Qatar Sports Investments completed its acquisition of Belgian club KAS Eupen on 17 September, formalising full ownership after taking control of the club’s sporting operations in December 2025. QSI, which owns a majority stake in Paris Saint-Germain, said it had been working with Eupen on the club’s long-term sporting and commercial development. Eupen were relegated to Belgium’s second division in May 2024 after eight seasons in the top flight and are now operating under sporting director Pasquale Sensibile and head coach Felice Mazzu.

The transaction expands the football portfolio of the ownership group behind one of Ligue 1’s dominant clubs. QSI acquired a majority stake in PSG in 2011 and also holds a minority stake in Portuguese club Braga, while Eupen has previously been used by Aspire Academy as a pathway for young talent. The stated focus at Eupen is a younger squad and stronger connection between the academy and first team. For PSG, the acquisition creates another club within the wider network associated with its owners, although the announcement concerned Eupen rather than a change at the Parisian club.
