Fiorentina sack Grosso and bring back Vanoli
Fiorentina dismissed Fabio Grosso on Sunday after three defeats from three Serie A matches, making him the first head coach to lose his job this season in one of Europe’s five major leagues. The decision followed a 2-1 home defeat by Torino, which came after Fiorentina had been beaten 4-0 by Roma and 3-0 by promoted Frosinone. Grosso had only been appointed in June, replacing Paolo Vanoli after the club finished 15th last season. The former Italy defender’s departure came during Fiorentina’s centenary campaign and underlined the severity of their poor start.
The club moved quickly to restore Vanoli, who returned on Monday and led the afternoon training session at Viola Park. Vanoli had replaced Stefano Pioli in November last season and kept Fiorentina in Serie A after a difficult campaign. His first assignment will be Friday’s trip to Venezia, with the club seeking an immediate change in results and direction. The decision represents a striking reversal after Vanoli’s departure in the summer, but Fiorentina have prioritised familiarity and survival experience over a longer managerial search.
