What Could Go Wrong for Atletico Madrid?

This feels like a pressure fixture disguised as a routine home game. Atlético Madrid arrive at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano with 10 points from five matches and the expectation of turning a recent recovery into a proper run, while Osasuna come to Madrid after consecutive defeats and a need to steady the dressing room. The headlines all circle the same question: can Diego Simeone’s side make it back-to-back league victories after the 3-0 success against Real Sociedad? That result restored some emotional balance after defeats by Athletic Bilbao and Liverpool, although reports stressed it was closer than the score suggested. Osasuna, meanwhile, have already shown they can build momentum, winning two in a row earlier in the season, but their latest sequence has changed the mood. My first instinct is Atlético, though not with the certainty suggested by the market: the model gives them 45% for victory and 45% for a draw.

Atlético’s recent W-D-W-L-W sequence tells a story of resilience without complete control. They have scored 10 goals in five league games, averaging 2.0, while conceding 1.2, and their last-five attack and defence ratings are 59% and 65%. The 3-0 win over Real Sociedad matters psychologically because it followed two defeats, yet the press reports describe a side still lacking a fully composed final third. At home, the record is unbeaten: one win and one draw from two matches. Simeone has used 4-4-2 most often, in three of five games, with 4-1-4-1 and 3-4-2-1 also appearing. That flexibility can help Atlético manage the match’s emotional temperature. Their clearest route to victory is to impose the stronger attacking rhythm early, then make Osasuna chase a game in which the visitors have conceded 1.6 goals per match this season.

Osasuna’s story is more fragile. Their opening five produced two wins, one draw and two defeats, with five goals scored and eight conceded. The last-five figures are particularly revealing for a team travelling to a demanding ground: form is 47%, attack only 29%, and defence 53%, while the average return is 1.0 goal scored against 1.6 allowed. Their recent D-W-W-L-L run shows how quickly confidence has ebbed after that two-match winning burst. Away from home they have split their two fixtures, winning one and losing one, so this is not a side without an away response. The usual shape has been 4-2-3-1, used twice, alongside 5-4-1 and 4-4-2. That gives them options to protect the centre, but the psychological challenge is obvious: Football Whispers noted Osasuna trailed at half-time in six of their last eight matches. A slow start would invite Atlético’s pressure.

The recent head-to-head gives Atlético a narrow psychological advantage rather than a complete historical stranglehold: they have won three of the last five, with no draws, while Osasuna won two. Atlético took the latest meeting 2-1 on 12 May 2026 and also won 1-0 at this stadium on 18 October 2025; Osasuna’s victories, however, include a striking 4-1 in Madrid in May 2024. Tactically, Atlético’s preferred 4-4-2 should meet Osasuna’s 4-2-3-1 in a contest for territory between the lines, with the visitors’ 5-4-1 a possible route to a more defensive evening. The numbers favour the hosts in attack, 67% to 33% in the comparison, and defence, 57% to 43%. Yet the model’s 45% home and 45% draw split warns that Atlético’s edge may not become a clean, comfortable win. The decisive phase should be the opening half-hour.

I am backing Atlético Madrid, but with medium confidence and a clear respect for the draw. The model makes the home side the likelier winner, while its double-chance recommendation reflects the real shape of the fixture; however, Pinnacle’s 1.41 home price implies 71%, far above Atlético’s 45% win probability. That is not a price I would chase for a straight home win, even with the hosts unbeaten at home and Osasuna arriving off two losses. The 4.84 draw price implies 21%, compared with the model’s 45%, so the market is much more optimistic about a decisive result than I am. My call is Atlético to edge it because of the stronger scoring rate, the home setting and the emotional lift of the Real Sociedad win. The biggest risk is a stubborn Osasuna block turning the match into another low-margin contest, where the draw becomes entirely realistic.
