Tebas renews attack on Infantino's FIFA leadership
La Liga president Javier Tebas launched another sharp attack on FIFA president Gianni Infantino, saying the governing body is 'destroying the football industry' through the expansion of international competitions and the pressure it places on domestic leagues and clubs. In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tebas was asked directly whether Infantino should resign and replied: 'In my opinion, yes, I think his time is up.' The comments land amid long-running criticism of fixture congestion and FIFA's plans to widen the World Cup, issues that have become central flashpoints in the global game.
The remarks also come as Infantino prepares to seek a fourth term in office. He said in April that he would run for the 2027-2031 cycle, with the vote scheduled for March 18 next year in Morocco. Tebas argued that while many in football disagree with Infantino's direction, the FIFA president remains protected by strong support among national federations. He added: 'He shouldn't stay, but the current state of affairs means he won't leave,' underlining how hard it is to mount a serious challenge to the incumbent.
